the lions of fifth avenue

Fiona Davis

“Leave it to a librarian to point out the alliteration in my life’s tragedies.” Another book for book lovers. (see: The Starless Sea) Davis creates two timelines/stories that are intertwined with just-parallel plots. The story is set around the New York City public library and all of it's grandest and most treasured artifacts -- how could you not be intrigued? A mystery book that had me reading so avidly... I finished in one day!

the strange and beautiful sorrows of ava lavender

Leslye Walton

“Why would you be given wings if you weren't meant to fly?” A young girl who was born with wings recounts the story of her family, as well as her current life in this story knit with magical realism. I was enchanted by the descriptions as well as the sprinkles of magic, but the story actually took a deeper, somewhat darker turn that had me shivering to the core. An unexpected, but welcome, surprise. I most definitely underestimated this book!

dune

Frank Herbert

“The people who can destroy a thing, they control it.” A epic story about a family that gets transferred to a new planet and has to deal with the consequences. Dueling families, sci-fi creatures and beings, and spectacular showdowns all rolled into one. I would say that the middle of the story lagged for me, but the beginning and end had me hooked! I only wish there were a little more set-up for the world; so that I could warm up to it an understand it better.

the old man who read love stories

Luis Sepúlveda

“At day, the man and the jungle. At night, the man is the jungle” A story of a man in a remote river town deep in the Ecuadoran jungle, and his life between nature and the slowly developing town. I read this story in one sitting, as I could not bear to put it down without knowing what happened in the next scene. A quick and short read, this story explores a lot of themes that authors take chapters and chapters to write about in other stories. It is the perfect balance of simple and complex, and it isn't bogged down by emotion -- if that makes sense. I loved it!
